We’re Already 5 Days into National Bike Month—Here’s How to Get Involved
It was a nice little surprise after looking at the calendar and realizing that we’re already 5 days into National Bike Month. It was an even bigger surprise when I came across the Legion of American Bicyclists’ map and catalog of events happening this month. Across the nation, cyclists are celebrating by coming together within the biking community and organizing hundreds of events to get even more people out on their bikes and feeling healthy and riding safe. The most important days of the month fall on Bike to Work Week starting on May 12th and running through the 18th. If you’re out in the car stuck in traffic and see a few more bicycles on the road all with someone with a giant smile on their face, now you know why.
So how are you supposed to get involved?
With the help of local clubs and organizations, you can check out what is happening in your deck of the woods this month. For example, I found out that there is a San Diego Kickoff Event today just down the street from me that I think I’ll check out. I found out from the San Diego Association of Governments, aka SANDAG, after checking out their Instagram account.
The League of American’s Bicyclists resources can help you get started. Their map is live and shows events happening around the country. It’s fair to assume that there might a be a few events that haven’t made it onto the calendar, so alternatively it’s smart to check in with local bike clubs, bike shops, and community centers!
A Few Cool Events We’ve Spotted:
🚴 San Diego - It's the 30th annual Bike Anywhere Day in San Diego on May 15th. It boasts over 100 stops and you can even get a free t-shirt. Just don't forget to sign-up before the 15th if you are going to participate!
🚴 Washington, D.C. - The 16th Annual Community Bike Ride in Washington D.C. is put on by the D.C. Public Library. On Sunday, May 11, you get to ride past the National Mall and explore the Newly Renovated Southwest Library after an epic 11 mile ride across the Capital.
📚 Colorado One of my favorite finds is a Bike Community in Colorado doing 31 days of bike facts. The Buffalo Bicycle Classic will be dishing out some lesser-known facts that might even stump the biggest of bicycle enthusiasts. One of the craziest being “The fastest recorded speed of a human on a bike is 183.9 mph, set by Denise Mueller-Korenek in 2018.” @buffbikeclassic
🧩 Wisconsin - In the city of Fitchburg in Wisconsin, the Mayor is hosting a “Bike to Work with the Mayor Day.” Granted, I found out about this event by trying to click on the map for an event called Bike to Work Bingo which has peaked my interest greatly, but either way both events sound like fun.
One of the easily accesible events you can take part in no matter where you are is the National Bike Month Challenge. It's put on by the Love to Ride Program and it's super simple and free to get started. Sign-up solo or with friends/coworkers/family and ride for more than 10 minutes to start getting points. Compete and race to see who can bike the farthest. You even get to see that amout of C02 you offset collectively! We're thinking about registering Superhuman Bikes as a workplace, so we'll let you know how it goes!
The most important thing about National Bike Month will always be building the community to be stronger than ever before. It’s incredible seeing bikers across the nation all celebrate these great vehicles that connect us all, but how could you make it better? How are you going to get involved this year? Better yet, how are you going to get your local community to get involved? Let us know in the comments!
